How many days until Christmas?

The number at the top of this page is the answer for today: the days until Christmas, worked out from your device's date and counted to midnight at the start of December 25 in your own time zone. Under it, a live Christmas countdown shows the hours, minutes and seconds, and the cards translate the wait into the units people actually plan with: sleeps, weeks, Fridays, Saturdays, full weekends and working days.

Christmas Day is always December 25, but the weekday moves forward each year, by two days after a February 29. The page works all year round. After Christmas Day it moves on to next year's date by itself, and on December 25 it shows a Christmas message with the count to the following year.

Using the Christmas countdown

  1. Choose what to count to. Christmas Day counts to December 25. Christmas Eve counts to December 24, for families whose main celebration is on the evening before.
  2. Decide whether today counts. With Count today on, today is included in the Fridays, Saturdays, weekends and working days if it qualifies. Turn it off late in the day, when today's Friday or working day is already used up. The days and sleeps do not change.
  3. Read the cards. Sleeps is the number of nights to go. Weeks splits the days into weeks and days. Total hours is the whole hours left on the live clock.
  4. Copy it. Copy countdown copies every figure as text for a message, a newsletter or a classroom board.

The note under the cards states the exact dates covered by the Friday, weekend and working-day counts, so you can check them against a calendar.

How the countdown is worked out

Everything starts from today's date in your time zone:

days      = December 25 − today's date        (calendar days)
sleeps = days (nights before Christmas morning)
weeks = days ÷ 7, rounded down; remainder = extra days
Fridays = Fridays from today to December 24
weekends = Saturdays from today whose Sunday is also before December 25
work days = Mondays to Fridays from today to December 24

Worked example: Monday, November 2, 2026.

  • Days until Christmas: 53, so there are 53 sleeps.
  • Weeks until Christmas: 7 weeks and 4 days.
  • Fridays left: 7 (November 6, 13, 20, 27 and December 4, 11, 18).
  • Saturdays left: 7, and all 7 weekends are complete before Christmas.
  • Working days left: 39 with today counted, or 38 without it.

At 8:00 AM that morning, the live clock shows 52 days, 16 hours, which is 1,264 hours in total. The clock reads one day less than the calendar count because part of November 2 has already gone.

How many sleeps, weeks, Fridays and weekends until Christmas

Sleeps is the British way of counting down with children: the nights left before Christmas morning. On Christmas Eve there is 1 sleep left. A 24-door Advent calendar opens its first door on December 1, which is 24 sleeps before Christmas.

Weeks suit planning. "7 weeks and 4 days" says more about how many shopping trips or school weeks remain than "53 days".

Fridays matter for paydays, work parties and the last school days of term. When Christmas falls on a Friday, as in 2026, that Friday is Christmas itself and is not counted. From Saturday, December 19, 2026, no Fridays are left at all, even though Christmas is 6 days away.

Full weekends count Saturday and Sunday pairs that both fall before December 25. If Christmas is on a Sunday, as in 2033, the Saturday before it is Christmas Eve and its weekend is not complete, so it is left out. The Saturdays left card still includes it, which is why the two numbers can differ by one.

Working days left before Christmas

The working-day count covers Monday to Friday, up to and including December 24, and never includes Christmas Day itself. It does not know about public holidays, because those depend on your country, state and employer. Subtract them yourself:

  • United States: Thanksgiving (the fourth Thursday of November, November 26 in 2026) falls in the run-up, and many employers also close the day after.
  • United Kingdom: England and Wales have no bank holiday between the August bank holiday and Christmas. Scotland adds St Andrew's Day on November 30.
  • Shift and retail work: if you work weekends, the working-day total will understate your remaining shifts.

To work out pay for the days left, the hourly to salary calculator converts a rate into weekly or monthly figures.

Counting down to Christmas Eve

The Christmas Eve tab counts to midnight at the start of December 24. In Germany, Poland, Scandinavia and much of central Europe, presents are usually opened on Christmas Eve, so that is the evening children wait for. From November 2, 2026, Christmas Eve is 52 days away: 7 weeks and 3 days, with 7 Fridays and 38 working days, counting today.

On December 24 itself the Eve countdown shows a Christmas Eve message and moves on to next year. The Christmas Day tab then shows the hours left until midnight.

Christmas moves one weekday later each year and two after a leap day, which is why 2028 and 2032 jump. A US federal holiday on a Saturday is observed on the Friday before, and one on a Sunday on the Monday after. In the UK, a Christmas Day or Boxing Day bank holiday that falls on a weekend moves to the next weekday that is not already a bank holiday. Employers outside these rules may close on different days.

Christmas across time zones and calendars

Because the countdown uses local midnight, family members in different countries see different hours. The first inhabited place to reach December 25 is Kiritimati, also called Christmas Island, in Kiribati, which keeps time at UTC+14. American Samoa, at UTC−11, is among the last, about 25 hours later. Sydney reaches midnight 11 hours before London in December, and New York 5 hours after it.

Not every church uses the same December 25. Several Orthodox churches, including the Russian and Serbian, follow the Julian calendar for feast days, so their Christmas falls on January 7 in the civil calendar. The Armenian Apostolic Church keeps January 6. For any other date, the countdown to a date tool counts to whatever day and time you choose.

Tips for the run-up

  • Shopping weekends. The full-weekends card is the number of Saturday and Sunday pairs left, which is the realistic budget for trips to the shops or a market.
  • Posting deadlines. Postal services publish last recommended posting dates every year, and international mail closes weeks before domestic mail. Check the current dates with your carrier rather than relying on last year's.
  • Count today or not. On a Friday afternoon, turn off Count today so the Fridays card shows the ones still ahead.
  • Classrooms. The copied text works as a daily board message, and the sleeps figure is easier for young children than days.
  • Leave planning. Working days left, minus your public holidays, is the time you have to finish projects before the break. The days from today calculator finds the date a set number of days ahead.

Privacy and limitations

The countdown runs in your browser and reads only your device's clock and time zone. Your choice of Christmas Day or Christmas Eve, and the Count today setting, are kept in local storage on this device; nothing is uploaded. Until the page has loaded in your browser, it shows the date and weekday of the next Christmas as worked out when the page was built, without the live day count.

If your device clock or time zone is set wrongly, the countdown is wrong by the same amount. The working-day count is Monday to Friday only; it does not remove public holidays, school holidays or personal leave. The holiday columns in the table use the usual substitute-day rules, and governments can still change bank holidays for a particular year.

Frequently asked questions

How many weeks until Christmas?

Divide the days left by 7: the whole number is the weeks and the remainder is the extra days. On Monday, November 2, 2026, Christmas is 53 days away, which is 7 weeks and 4 days. The countdown shows this as 7w 4d and updates at midnight. Counting by Fridays or weekends instead can give a different feel for the time left, so those numbers are shown too.

How many sleeps until Christmas?

Sleeps are the nights left before Christmas morning, which is the same as the number of calendar days to December 25. On Christmas Eve there is 1 sleep left, and a 24-door Advent calendar starts on December 1, exactly 24 sleeps before Christmas. The phrase is common in British English, especially when talking with children, for whom “how many more nights” is easier to picture than a number of days.

How many Fridays are left until Christmas?

The tool counts every Friday from today up to Christmas Eve. On November 2, 2026 there are 7: November 6, 13, 20 and 27 and December 4, 11 and 18. Christmas Day 2026 is itself a Friday, so it is not counted. Turn off Count today if today is a Friday that you no longer want to include, for example on Friday evening.

When does the Christmas countdown reset?

The countdown runs to midnight at the start of December 25 in your time zone. During Christmas Day the page shows a Christmas message and starts counting to next year's Christmas, so on December 25, 2026 it shows 365 days until Christmas 2027. There is nothing to reset by hand: the page works out the next Christmas from your device's date every time it loads.

Does the countdown use my time zone?

Yes. It counts to local midnight on your device, so people in different countries see different numbers of hours. Christmas arrives first on Kiritimati (Christmas Island) in Kiribati, which keeps time at UTC+14, and about 25 hours later in American Samoa at UTC−11. If you share a screenshot with family abroad, their own countdown may be several hours ahead or behind yours.

Is Christmas always on December 25?

For most churches and for public holidays in most countries, yes. Several Orthodox churches, such as the Russian and Serbian, still follow the Julian calendar for church dates, so their December 25 falls on January 7 in the everyday Gregorian calendar. The Armenian Apostolic Church celebrates on January 6. In much of central and northern Europe, the main family celebration takes place on the evening of December 24.

What day of the week is Christmas in 2026 and 2027?

Christmas Day 2026 is a Friday, so the US federal holiday is that day and the UK bank holidays are Friday, December 25 and Monday, December 28. Christmas 2027 is a Saturday: the US federal holiday moves to Friday, December 24, and UK bank holidays move to Monday 27 and Tuesday 28. The table in the tool lists every year up to 2035.
